Handicapping Tip - At What Point Do Training Methods Change in Horse Racing?

The training methods of thoroughbred race horses have been studied by many handicappers so that they can understand what the trainer is trying to accomplish with a horse and also so they can determine if he or she will be successful. Watching the methods of the great conditioners, one quickly learns that getting a cheap claimer to the winners circle often involves different strategies than winning big races.

The first handicapping tip you should learn is that you will probably never make a profit betting on horses unless you understand the basics of conditioning a horse and how the greats do it. When you sit down to evaluate the runners in a race, what you are really doing, other than comparing each of them to the rest of the field, is trying to determine how that horse will run in today's race.

The only way you can gauge the runner's ability is to look at what the trainer has done and try to figure out if the runner will improve, stay the same, or regress. Nothing in the business of betting on horses is static, especially the actual condition of the runners. The trainer is the person who has the most direct effect on the horse. Looking at equipment changes, workout times and frequency, and which races the runner is placed in will help you to figure out what the conditioner has planned for the horse.

You will notice that stakes horses and runners in big races are usually more formful and keep their conditioning longer. The bottom of the barrel claimers usually have some physical problems that limit them and also make them unpredictable. Therefore, at some point between the cheapest claimer and the highest priced performer, you'll notice a difference in the frequency of workouts and the speeds.

Super trainers such as Bob Baffert will often push a great runner such as Coil through a half mile workout like the work that Coil posted before the Travers. Coil went the half in company in 46.12 seconds. While a top performer like Coil can work like that and come back within a week and race a big race against Grade 1 horses, cheap claimers would need more time off and would probably also come back lame from such an effort.

While horses in Starter Allowances and Handicaps may not be of the same caliber as Coil and other Grade 1 performers, it is good to note that when one works fast and is brought right back it is often a very good indication of a sound horse. The cutoff point is usually somewhere around the top claiming prices where horses slip from high priced claiming races into Starter Allowance ranks and back to the big claimers.

Don't look for fast workouts in the cheap claiming ranks and if you do see one, be cautious because it may have taken more out of the horse and it will run a poor race. Therefore, fast works may be excellent indicators of conditioning for the top horses, but often have the opposite effect on cheap horses.

Jockey Changes Can Signal a Change in the Horse for Smart Handicappers

The most significant piece of equipment any race horse carries is the jockey. Blinkers and tongue ties may make a big difference, but when it is all said and done, the rider who pilots the horse and makes crucial decisions in a split second is the biggest key to success. Most past performances list equipment changes, though they still don't tell us about tongue ties, but which one notes a change in rider? You have to look for those yourself.

When a different jockey will be in the irons the astute handicapper makes a note of it and tries to figure out what that means to the performance of the horse and the sharpest horse players know it isn't all about jockey win percentages. There may be many reasons for a change and the most significant one is that the horse may have improved or declined since its last race.

That is what you really need to think about and question when you see the regular rider is off. The first thing to check is whether that new rider is one of the trainer's go-to riders. If a generic reinsman gets off and a rider with a high win percent for that conditioner gets on, that is a very positive sign. Does it signal an instant win? Certainly not.

There may be several reasons why a trainer will ask his or her favorite jock to get on a horse. Maybe the conditioner wants the rider's opinion about the animal or wants to try something different. It may also mean that the former rider decided he or she had enough and there is another mount that has a better chance of winning that is available. I think the best way to describe the often baffling business of musical riders is that there are wheels within wheels and you may never be able to figure out just why the rider switch occurred.

One way to find a clue as to the jockey switch is to check the recent works. Do you see an improvement? Is there an equipment change today? Let's say the trainer tried blinkers on the horse and got a much better workout time from it, that may be why a better jockey has been given the mount today.

If there is a suspicious lack of workouts, however, and a leading rider gets off the horse, it may signal a decline or even a physical problem such as lameness. If you are of a conspiratorial mindset, you might suspect that a lesser known jockey will keep the odds higher on the horse and that is why a no-name jockey has climbed aboard, but in my experience, things are seldom that murky in the world of training horses. The conditioners are pretty straightforward with their moves and if you take the time to learn a little about horse training, you'll usually be able to figure out the reasons for equipment changes or jockey switches.

Barack Obama and the WNBA, change, in the faith

| WASHINGTON - JUNE 29: U.S. President Barack O...

Earlier this week I heard an interview with first lady Michelle Obama, and it was the election in 2008 by President Barack Obama discussion. The interviewer asked Mrs. Obama, if you ever doubted whether her husband was prepared to be the President of the United States. Mrs. Obama answered confidently, that they knew that President Obama was prepared; in her mind, the question was whether the American public was ready to choose it.

WoW! The American public was ready to choose President Obama?

Now I'm not to mention President Obama, a political statement, but as an example to illustrate the historical importance of his choice to make. The racism and segregation have a storied history the United States and an African American President election was absolutely amazing.

So many Americans never thought she would see the day when an African American President would be; and many more, including myself, was an overwhelming feeling of the recording after the election.

What happens if the record, the millions of Americans for the opening of experienced about race and politics went day? What happens if it contain sex and sport? What happens if there was a dramatic shift in the perception of women in professional sports? Can you imagine, turn on ESPN or read the sports section and the women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is top billing?

Now that the WNBA of his fifteenth season celebrating, I believe, this day comes. in fact, I know it is. Fan attendance and TV ratings are up, but everyone wants to know "Where we go from here?" "When are Player salaries increased?"  "When will the teams make money and not lose it?" "As a player widely covers mainstream media?"

Personally, I think that the WNBA has the lead take over and do something out of the box and shake his current model to address these problems. Try lowering the rims; Adoption of a wild creative marketing campaign, which is so outrageous that it could, in fact work Change the ownership minority which contains hard fans as the owner; or better still, head-on tackle issues of gender equity.

Sports fans are ready go player to the next level, which can League, there to take us!

This weekend the WNBA is its top 15 players of all time during the honor the all-star game in San Antonio; and it celebrates his many achievements and set a tone for the future. I'm willing to see you get the attention they deserved player and have an own historic "Barack Obama moment." Are not you?
